If you are thinking of entering a cohabitation or prenuptial agreement, you most likely have very good reason to do so. Doing so could be one of the most critical and life changing decisions you ever have to make.
In Ontario, law enables un-married or common-law spouses who plan to live together or do in fact live together to enter an agreement known as a cohabitation agreement. This agreement will cover things such as the rights and obligations of each person in the relationship. You may be responsible for the debts of your partner, and if you wish to share assets and debts, then they can exercise their intentions to do so in a cohabitation agreement. If you are a person who is in a long-term relationship but are not interested in marriage, this agreement may be of interest to you.
A prenuptial agreement provides legal protection over assets that a person acquired before marriage. When signing a prenuptial agreement, you may specify which assets you want to keep or protect if the marriage ends. If you are a person with a great deal of assets that you want to ensure you keep protected, this agreement may be of interest to you.
We understand that these may be stressful decisions for a person to make. As such, we are here to support our clients through what may be a difficult or stress inducing time.
